Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce Champions Growth and Innovation at 123rd Annual Meeting

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and leaders of the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce spoke to a capacity crowd of more than 1,200 about regional growth and innovation at the chamber's 123rd annual meeting today (9/29) at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center.

Ballmer was joined by outgoing chamber chair David Tang, a partner at Preston Gates Ellis LLP, incoming chair James Peoples, president of the Seattle-Cascades District for KeyBank and Steve Leahy , president CEO of the chamber.

“The Chamber is committed to helping all businesses succeed,” said Peoples. “And successful businesses create family wage jobs and a healthy community. As the Puget Sound area recovers from the recession of the last four years, we must be sharp and stay focused. We've got to remember that we're competing every day in a world-wide race that really has no finish line.”

Peoples highlighted three major policy issues facing the region that the Chamber will advance in the coming year: transportation infrastructure, investments in education and research capacity and business climate improvements in Seattle , the region and the state. He pledged Chamber support for a viable transportation system, including leading opposition to I-912 and commercial jet expansion at Boeing Field, and continued advocacy for replacing unsafe structures such as the Alaskan Way Viaduct and the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge first.

Two local entrepreneurs were also recognized for their business success and community service. James Donaldson, owner of Donaldson Fitness, was presented with the Jeri McDonald Community Service Award. The award recognizes entrepreneurial excellence and dedicated volunteer service to the Greater Seattle Chamber and the broader community.

The Safeco Minority Best Business Practices Award was presented to Oscar Castillo, Poblano Carpet Cleaning. Created to recognize and support excellence in minority-owned businesses in the Central Area and the Rainier Valley , the award is a joint program of Safeco Insurance and the Urban Enterprise Center at the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce.
